Why could they not have released the code? Seems almost unconscionable to just up and leave and abandon some things.

I haven't seen anyone mention this, but IIRC Linplug sold up to Propellerheads (Reason Studios)

Spectral -> Europa
CrX4 -> Grain

I looked into Europa and it doesn't seem or sound all that similar. Europa's a wavetable synth, too, yes?, if kind of different than a 'normal' wavetable perhaps.

True, however the underlying principles remain the same as Spectral, while the overall architecture differs. Load a user waveform into one of Europa's 3 layers' oscillators while keeping the others switched off and another user waveform into that layer's Spectral Filter and you'll get the same sound as if you did the same thing in Linplug's Spectral.
