If everyone stuck to those codes, new genres and sub-genres would never get created / have been created.
Late 90's / early 00's are still known as the best era for Trance and there were certainly 0 f**ks given about having to use the right kick or percussion sound back then. If people do feel that way now, it's probably why the music isn't as good as it was back then.
And yes, DJs had plenty of aliases but it wasn't always for different genres. Picotto made both Trance and Techno under his regular Picotto name. Ferry Corsten produced 138 BPM uplifting Trance and then something like Punk (the song title, not the genre), under the same name, with Punk not being what anyone would have labled 'Trance'. And nobody as a Trance or Ferry Corsten audience "mocked" him for it, far from it.
