So I’ve visited their website to refresh my memory, and my conclusion as a non-programmer is that Core is done if NI goes the CMajor route, if it hasn’t done so already. It comes with a JIT engine so you can prototype in real time, there’s C++ export, it’s probably more efficient than Core and whatnot. It would seem outright stupid to maintain two bespoke development and prototyping environments at the same time. Then again it’s NI, so who knows. And then, there's Cmajor...
It looks like Kontakt will be their new main synthesis platform (with a bit of AI tacked on) for a while. It’s a product with a huge install base, in many ways irreplaceable, and judging by the release notes it’s the only product they’ve actively worked on lately.
But I can easily see it getting out of hand, especially if NI wants to maintain backward compatibility. I just can’t imagine Kontakt with today's UX being successful as a synthesis tool, and if a rewrite is out of the question, they run the risk of creating a convoluted monster nobody will want to use — while Massive X keeps hanging around in its weird, half-finished state, and Reaktor gets compatibility updates at best.
Now, I’m sure there’s lots we don’t know about, and I’m sure NI has thought long and hard about it. But at the moment Simon’s comments leave me with more questions than answers, I guess. Maybe with the exception of Reaktor: RIP
