Yes, the Surge team has it down pat, and they're what I was thinking of when I said I don't have to log in to other GitHub sites just to download stuff. But to be fair to the Dexed developer, creating a great emulation of the Yamaha DX7 and knowing the ugly details of dealing with GitHub are two different things. As long as he continues with the former, the latter doesn't really matter.There is a good, user-friendly approach: the Surge team publish nightly builds regularly under Releases page at Github. So every time a new version appears you can download it without logging in or follow any other links. Simple. Handy. Perfect.
